Oh, how I adore this sweet family! I photographed Ryan and Amie’s wedding a few years ago in Nashville. Shortly after that, they moved to Los Angeles so that Ryan could attend seminary. Little did I knew that just a couple of years later, I would find myself living in Los Angeles as well. How fun it was to photograph them again as a family of four. We photographed their session at Point Dume in Malibu. It was a chilly and windy day but we had so much fun and the scenery was beautiful! Now that we are here, this family is moving back to Nashville but what a fun keepsake these images are to remember their time out west.

Kiddos

We packed up the house and began driving across the country to L.A.. On our second night on the road, I downloaded these film scans of my sweet kids. It was the last roll of film I took of them in our Nashville home. It was a bittersweet reminder of our love for our home and our excitement for the journey ahead. Love these two.

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of photographing Dannii + Al’s engagement session at the historic Franklin Theatre. This lovely couple is from the U.K. and are inviting their friends and family to a celebrate their destination wedding at Moonshine Hill, just south of Nashville.

Dannii and Al were engaged while visiting here and it seemed to make sense that the wedding would be in a place that they have fallen in love with. Photography Styles Explained

A photographer’s style is not only what you see in their portfolio, but also their physical interaction with you on your wedding day. Some of the words you’ll see or hear as you chat with photographers are things like photojournalism, fine art, fashion or traditional. You will also find that a lot of photographers are a blend of these different styles. Here’s a basic breakdown of what it all means.

In photojournalism, the emphasis is on capturing the emotions and events of the day, ultimately telling the story of your wedding through imagery. The photographer stands back and observes the day, often anticipating what will happen and taking the shot at the perfect moment. Outside of a handful of relaxed family images, you won’t be given much guidance or direction and any direction given will be with the purpose of encouraging natural emotions. You will most likely be drawn to photojournalism if you see an image and are compelled by the emotion of what was captured. With photojournalism, the ideal end result is an album showcasing the emotions and events as a complete series of images.

Fine art photography emphasizes the photographer’s interpretation of your day. The photographer will give some direction and will often create interesting compositions, angles, and vast scenery to create compelling imagery from your day. You will most likely be drawn to fine art images if you find yourself admiring the overall beauty and splendor of an image. You may even find yourself creating your own interpretation of the image yourself. With fine art, the ideal end result is a large wall print or a collection of 20-30 of the very best images from your day.

With fashion photography you’re going to find images with an emphasis on interesting poses and dramatic lighting. Your photographer will likely bring additional lights to add to the mood of the photos. Poses will have a modern edge and will often look like they could have been pulled from the pages of Vogue or GQ. The photographer may need to be given time to set-up lights or additional equipment and you will most definitely want to allow ample time for your photographer to create these images. You will most likely be drawn to fashion photography if you have a love for fashion itself and want something with a bit more edge in your wedding album. The ideal end result is a series of wall prints or a modern album showcasing the images of you at your very best.

Traditional photography focuses more on formal portraiture and capturing the key elements of the day. The photographer is very hands-on and will often direct and pose the people in the images. Images are less candid and people are often looking directly at the camera and smiling. The photographer may use natural light or bring additional lighting and may work from a provided shot list of portraits before capturing moments. You will most likely be drawn to this style of photography if you are naturally drawn to classic portraiture. The ideal end result of this style is a beautifully framed classic wall portrait and a timeless leather album with many family portraits and those special traditions from your day.

Now that you understand the different styles, it’s time to find a photographer that is a blend of the styles that you are most drawn to. And again, just about every photographer out there blends the styles to some degree. At my core, I thrive on capturing the moments of a wedding day. I love to sit back and take it all in, capturing the full story of the day. I will spend a few moments during my time with a couple to capture some fine art imagery and almost every couple requests family portraits, though I tend to do them in a less traditional and more relaxed way.

Inspired by Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey finally caught on in a big way and I’m so very glad that it has. It is indeed one of my favorite shows – I love the setting, the drama, the characters!

After watching the season two finale, I thought it would be fun to do an inspired bridal shoot and see if I could guess what Lady Mary might wear on her wedding day. So, my fellow Downton obsessed friend Erin agreed to be my model and we photographed two different looks inspired by the show.

I have been hanging on to these lovely pics until we saw Lady Mary finally wed Matthew on the season three premier. So now, I am excited to share some of my favorites with you!
